Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the main international airport of Malaysia. It is located in Sepang District, Selangor, to the south of Kuala Lumpur and was officially opened on 28 March 1998.

The airport is the main hub for Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Malindo Air. It is also a hub and main international gateway for AirAsia. The airline has strong ties with KLIA through its subsidiary company Malindo Airways.
The airport opened on 28 March 1998 to replace the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport as Kuala Lumpur International Airport. At that time, KLIA was the most expensive airport ever built at a cost of RM1.5 billion and has been called a white elephant due to its low traffic figures and high maintenance costs. Then Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad initiated construction of a new airport at Kuantan Port in 1993 but this project was abandoned after he left office in 1999 because of higher costs than expected.

KLIA is one of the world’s largest airports by land area at 5,100 ha (12,950 acres) and has a capacity to handle up to 32 million passengers per annum (PAX) or 90 million passengers per year (MPY). The airport offers 610,000 square metres (6,700,000 sq ft) of parking space for aircrafts.
The airport has one passenger terminal building, two runways and three passenger aprons which can handle five wide-bodied aircrafts at any one time; this includes two dedicated high-speed aircraft bays for the Airbus A380 superjumbo.

The airport has two runways and serves more than 30 airlines flying to some 180 destinations worldwide. Some of the world’s busiest routes between KL and Europe and Asia Pacific, including London Heathrow, Hong Kong, Tokyo Haneda and Sydney Kingsford Smith are operated by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia X, AirAsia Zest and other low-cost carriers.

KLIA was the first airport in the world to have a full-fledged air traffic control tower with an integrated taxiway centre for aircraft parking purpose. It was opened on March 31, 1998 by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad who also performed the ribbon cutting ceremony. The airport has been voted “World’s Best Airport” five times: in 2006 by Skytrax; in 2009 by Skytrax; in 2010 by Skytrax; in 2011 by Skytrax; and again in 2012 by Skytrax (Tokyo Haneda was runner-up).
